UNTER STRØM continue defining their dark electronic identity with ‘Fold’, the second single from the Los Angeles and San Diego-based duo formed by Alex Gonzales and John Kunkel.
Built around hypnotic bass movement, mechanical percussion and evolving industrial textures, ‘Fold’ explores a more restrained and minimal direction than the project’s earlier material. Rather than relying on dramatic melodic peaks, the track thrives through tension, atmosphere and gradual progression, creating an immersive late-night experience designed for dark rooms and extended dancefloor moments.
The project unites two respected figures from different corners of electronic music. Gonzales has built a growing international audience through his work with Matte Blvck, while Kunkel is widely known through both The New Division and his melodic electronic project John Grand, which has received support from figures including Armin van Buuren.
‘Fold’ first began taking shape during a flight to Calgary, where Gonzales started experimenting with layered basslines and minimalist rhythmic ideas. As with previous UNTER STRØM material, the track evolved through an ongoing exchange between both artists, with Kunkel adding melodic tension, atmosphere and additional sonic detail to expand the original concept.
