- GRLSKOUT talks music production, DJing for sharks and her new sound for 2024
Can you share a memorable experience or gig you've had while performing as a DJ? I got to DJ on top of a yacht in Tahiti in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with 6 other yachts in a circle formation during sunset. I was playing Rufus Du Sol while watching sharks and stingrays swim to the center of the yacht formation and people jumping in to swim with them. They can apparently hear the music and frequencies and it attracted them. It was so beautiful to watch I honestly had tears. I also DJed a private event at Michael Jacksons Neverland Ranch which was a very memorable experience. How do you stay updated on the latest music trends and discoveries in your genre? I like to dedicate 2 days a month where I deep dive on Beatport, and other record pools that I am apart of. I also listen to different playlists on Spotify while I workout or go for a run and when I come across a track I really like, I then screenshot it. It’s a nice way to multitask and get a workout in by being productive and finding new music at the same time. What are some of your favorite plugins or soft synths, and why? Oh this is a hard one. To be honest I have many favorites for different purposes. My favorite soft synths are definitely Diva & Serum and I also love all the Arturia stuff. I use the Fabfilter ProQ a lot. For reverb I like Toraverb & Valhalla Shimmer is one of my favorites. I really like Thermal for saturation and Portal for happy accidents, both great plugins by Output. What was your first experience with music production, and how did it shape your journey? I got ableton when I was 22 years old and just started making remixes and one thing led to another and got to do my first official remix for Christina Aguilera. It’s so funny to look back at stuff you produced when you first started haha. Can you give anyone just starting out any tips of music production? Honestly YouTube is free school. That is how I learned how to produce. I would binge watch 100’s of tutorials and masterclasses for years until it clicked. I would say consistency is key. It is super important to put in a few hours a day every single day. Even if you have creative blocks still go in the studio and make music. Not every track is gonna be great. This will keep your flow and you will get faster and better at writing. Also try new techniques and don’t get stuck on old ones. Pick up a new instrument and just go for it! Can you walk us through your typical creative process when starting a new project? I am super organized in my studio and have all my samples organized by color, name, and genres and have everything at my disposal and made custom templates which helps tremendously. In sessions I immediately name each track and color it. As for process I usually start with a kick & baseline but sometimes with a vocal idea that I sang on my iPhone and work around it. Honestly I like to switch it up and not just have one system. How do you handle creative blocks, and are there specific strategies you find effective in reigniting inspiration? I think it’s very important to have a balanced life, eat healthy and exercise regularly. I personally am a morning person and wake up super early and start my day off boxing. It helps me clear my head first thing. Then I come home have a shower and start making music. If throughout the day I am stuck creatively I will go for a walk in nature because that always refreshes me or I set a timer and write in a journal. Did you have a good 2023 and what are you most excited about in 2024? I had an incredible year and so grateful to be doing what I love! I feel like I really re-found my sound in 2023 and excited to really make it come to life in 2024. I feel really good about it. I also will be doing a lot of great collabs and have a secret project in the pipeline that I have been also working on. Just really inspired and excited to share all this new music with the world that I have been working on. - Interview: Mz Worthy on her musical evolution and new label Love & Forgive
Mz Worthy releases her first single of the year and the second on her new label Love & Forgive, a soaring, electro-acid-house hybrid about the power of warmth, love and respect. We took the opportunity to catch up with her for a chat. Since releasing your breakout track "Irst Te" with Dirtybird Records in 2007, how do you feel your music has evolved, and what has driven these changes? The evolution of music styles has been profound since 2007, coinciding with my growth both as a producer and engineer. Over the years, I've honed my skills and gained confidence, catalyzing significant transformations in my approach to music. Initially drawn to tribal house vibes, my journey led me through phases of bass-driven tracks before culminating in the distinctive sounds I craft today. My artistic evolution is deeply intertwined with my changing musical tastes and the endless well of inspiration that fuels my creativity. Recently, I've found immense joy in venturing beyond the confines of pure dance floor beats, exploring new sonic territories. I've been captivated by the allure of creating music suited for leisurely strolls or long drives, embracing a more laid-back vibe that resonates with me on a personal level. Could you describe your creative process when producing a new track? How do you balance the technical aspects of production with the emotional content of your music? My creative process unfolds organically within the studio walls. I enter with an open mind, allowing the music to flow naturally without imposing any preconceived notions. While some sessions yield little more than experimentation, there are those rare gems where everything clicks into place, and I ride the wave of inspiration. On the technical front, I address immediate adjustments if they significantly impact the track's sonic landscape. However, I often reserve detailed technical fine-tuning until the composition is near completion. This approach allows me to immerse myself fully in the artistry of engineering, finding as much satisfaction in shaping the sound as I do in the initial creation process. You've shared that coming out as transgender was like putting pieces of a puzzle together. How has this personal evolution influenced your music and your connection with your audience? It was like putting a puzzle together, but its like you don’t you have all of these pieces. The growth I've experienced through this journey has been profound. Reflecting on the past, I realize I was merely a shell of myself. Now, my music exudes a sense of joy and lightness that wasn't there before. I find myself drawn to songs I never would have considered for my sets in the past. Above all, I've forged a deeper connection with my audience. When I step onto the stage, I feel a profound sense of presence, fully engaged with each and every person in the crowd. What can you tell us about your new single You Can't Label Me? I was craving something fresh and innovative, a departure from my usual creative routine. In a rare moment of clarity, I entered the session with a clear vision in mind. As I tinkered with chords and sounds, a beautiful progression emerged, effortlessly falling into place. Initially, I toyed with a processed vocal sample until a mantra began to form in my mind: "No no no, You Can't Label Me." Aware of my limitations as a vocalist, I enlisted the help of my friend Dominique Gomez to bring this vision to fruition. Now, as I share this piece with the world, my hope is that listeners will find empowerment in its message—never allowing themselves to be confined by others' labels. This is the second release on your new label, Love & Forgive. What can we expect from the imprint over the coming year? While I'm still navigating the trajectory of this label, I'm thrilled at the prospect of having a platform to showcase my music on my own terms. The freedom to share my creations with the world without constraints is incredibly liberating. As for the content, I'm open to exploring a myriad of styles within the electronic music realm. While the focus remains on electronic music, you may also encounter tracks with similar vibes, delve into house beats, or immerse yourself in ambient sounds. The possibilities are endless, and I'm excited to embark on this journey of musical exploration. As a role model for other trans people in dance music, what responsibilities do you feel come with this visibility? How do you navigate the challenges and opportunities it presents? Navigating the journey of self-discovery, especially in the public eye, has been a process filled with its own set of challenges and triumphs. While initially daunting, I've gradually embraced this journey of self-exploration, understanding that it's okay not to have all the answers right away. One role that I've wholeheartedly embraced is being a supportive presence for others who, like me, are on their own paths of self-discovery. There's a profound joy in extending a helping hand to those who may be navigating similar terrain, just as others have done for me in the past. It's a privilege to pay forward the kindness and guidance that I've received along my own journey. You've collaborated with artists like Eats Everything in the past. What do you look for in a collaborator, and are there any artists you're particularly keen to work with in the future? I value collaborating with individuals who bring a sense of joy and light-heartedness to the studio environment. It's important to me to foster a relaxed and playful atmosphere where creativity can flourish. Working with someone who shares this mindset makes the process not only productive but enjoyable as well. While there are a couple of people I have in mind for potential collaborations, I prefer not to mention any names at the moment. What matters most to me is finding those who resonate with my approach and who I can have a great time with while making music. Having played at some of the largest music festivals, what do you find most rewarding about live performances? How do you tailor your sets to connect with diverse audiences? Playing music for others is an experience like no other. Witnessing smiles light up faces in the crowd fills me with an indescribable joy. There's a magical connection that forms when I'm in the zone, dancing and feeling the music alongside my audience, free from the burden of worrying about the next track—it simply flows effortlessly. Before stepping into myself, I often found solace in hiding behind my music. But now, I've discovered a newfound sense of liberation and authenticity. When it comes to catering to diverse crowds, I approach each set with careful consideration, selecting tracks that resonate with both myself and the audience. Whether it's a large festival or an intimate venue, I tailor my sets to the specific energy and vibe of the moment, ensuring a memorable experience for everyone involved. In previous interviews you've hinted at upcoming releases and projects. Can you share more about what fans can expect from Mz Worthy in the near future? I have a release lined up for April on He.She.They—an EP titled "Vogue 1990." It's a dynamic two-track collection of house music that I'm eager to release and share with the world. With over two decades in the scene, what advice would you give to aspiring DJs and producers, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community, about navigating the industry and staying true to their identity? It's a challenge, but resisting the pressure to play only popular tracks in order to secure gigs is crucial. In my view, it's more fulfilling to curate sets that genuinely resonate with my artistic vision and passions. As a DJ, I see my role as an opportunity to introduce audiences to fresh and unexpected sounds that may not have crossed their paths otherwise. Additionally, it's important to be kind to yourself and not overly critical. Surprisingly, the sets I've felt least satisfied with often end up garnering the most positive feedback from listeners. Trust in your instincts and embrace the journey, knowing that authenticity and self-compassion are key ingredients in delivering memorable performances. Mz Worthy - You Can't Label Me feat. Dominique Gomez is out now on Love & Forgive

- Interview: Getting to Know Denmark-based techno DJ/Producer, Dan Sesko
Dan Sesko is an exhilarating new techno artist who recently dropped his debut EP via Barbuto's record label Mavic Music. Hailing from Odense in Denmark, Dan Sesko blends driving percussion with gripping synth lines to create tracks that are reminiscent of other producers such as Reinier Zonneveld and Julian Jeweil. Excited to learn more about the peak time style of this exciting up-and-coming producer, we invited Dan Sesko for this interview… Hi Dan Sesko, can you start by telling us what first attracted you to techno, and how would you describe your style? “I have been listening to electronic music as far back as I can remember. My parents were quite young when they had me and they always listened to early dance music in the car or at home in the kitchen. I have always been drawn to the more energetic electronic genres, and techno to me, is just the perfect blend between energy, groove and storytelling. To describe my own style, I would call it driving, energetic, melodic, and impactful.” Tell us about the local music scene where you live, and what influence it’s had on your own music? “There is not much of an actual techno music scene where I live. It’s slowly on its way up, with Danish acts as Faustix touring the country with a techno concept show. I honestly more often seek inspiration out and about in the rest of Europe. That would be Germany, Belgium, Holland, and the UK, just to name a few. To sum it up, I guess it influences me to go with what I find to be good and energetic music mostly.” Your new release “Solar Ray” comes via Barbuto's record label Mavic Music, and I wanted to ask how you first made contact with the imprint? “I am part of a music community called Finish More Music for a number of years and through that, got in touch with Barbuto and his label through that community. I sent a couple of demos, Barbuto liked them, and then we settled on a release. This being my first ever experience with a label has been such a joy! The people at Mavic Music, the community behind it and Barbuto himself, have been so kind and accommodating. I really appreciate the way I have been received.” Solar Ray is an EP featuring two of your original tracks, and it would be great to learn more about those productions and their concept? “I am still learning and settling on a workflow when producing. That means that sometimes when I make a track it can take forever to finish and it more often than not comes out sounding way overproduced. These two tracks are the essence of me not letting myself get caught up in some weird little detail that only I will be able to hear. I was just producing while having fun. That's what is the most important thing for me these days when producing music, and I believe that the audience is able to hear that.” Talk us through your studio set up, and any equipment that’s essential for your music production style? “I used to have a lot of gear. Push 2, Akai APC40, Korg Kaos Pad, different midi keyboards and controllers. Then with the help of the earlier mentioned music community, I refined my workflow and got to the conclusion that all that gear was just pulling me out of the flow. I boxed it all up, put it away, and now I don't even have a midi keyboard on my desk. It's all happening in my head, and then straight into Ableton Live. It works for me, and I am finishing more tracks than ever. Could be that I am gonna pull out a piece of gear at some point, but then it will be a planned session for playing around.” What was your biggest achievement of 2023, and what made it such a special moment? “My biggest personal achievement not regarding music was staying sober for a whole year. Everything just took off. Work, working out, being a parent, and making music. I can't recommend enough to just try and take a whole year out and only spend time on your goals and dreams. That year is gonna be over more quickly than you think and you will feel a lot farther down the road towards your dreams than ever. On the musical aspects, there is the fact that I am actually finishing tracks instead of just making loops or build-ups. everything I start turns into finished tracks. There is always something to learn from finishing your ideas, and there is no such thing as a bad idea when it comes to music. It just hasn't come to life yet. Last but definitely not least, is my debut release on Mavic Music. It made me believe in myself as a music producer and as an artist.” What is coming next in your schedule, and what are you most excited for in 2024? “I have a lot of new music I want to release throughout the year, and I am super excited to share my musical taste and sound as a DJ. My musical journey on social media is also going to be playing a big part, and let’s see, maybe 2024 is going to get me out to play for the people.” Thanks for taking the time to run through this interview, is there anything you would like to add before we finish? “I would like to thank the reader for taking your time to read this interview. I really appreciate it. I also would like to reach out to fellow music producers just starting out, and tell them all that hard work outshines talent every time! So, get in the studio or on your laptop every day and you are going to see results. Have a great 2024!” You can pick up a copy of Dan Sesko's new "Solar Ray" EP from HERE.
