Monroe - I´m Lonely One of my favourite tracks to close a set. It’s so melodic and emotional—I honestly listen to it every week, almost daily. It reminds me of the essence of music: raw emotion. Traumer - Luxuria Probably the most inspiring track I’ve come across recently. It’s a true piece of art—both technically and creatively. It became a personal challenge for me to reach that same level of quality and detail in my own productions. Per Hammar - Released Dubb (Mihai Popoviciu Remix) A true masterclass in composition. Nothing is left to chance—everything is dialed in with precision and taste. Mihai Popoviciu is always a safe bet when you’re looking for perfectly crafted minimal tracks. TAKE NOTES - CUTZ 01 Back to my roots—rock and old-school pop aesthetics. This edit flips and samples in unexpected ways, creating a cinematic kind of tension. It’s been a big inspiration when I feel like breaking out of classic structures. PAWSA - HANDZ UP This PAWSA banger is a major inspiration because it proves you can make a hit with almost nothing. It flows effortlessly from start to finish—an absolute dancefloor weapon. Floating Points - Last Bloom I’ll close with the most technically sophisticated track I’ve ever heard. Nothing more to say—just massive respect to Floating Points for this masterpiece. Multitalented, melodic project Mistier starts 2024 in the same vein it excelled in 2023 with another high-quality, authentic and introspective new single. This led to a need for inner solace, peace that comes from within as opposed to externally. Victor Ruiz’s VOLTA imprint heads into 2024 in the same vein as it ended 2023, with an unrelenting flow of top-quality releases, the next from Brazilian power duo Wehbba and label boss Victor Ruiz. Their infamous b2b at Warehouse Project in December 2022 was maybe a sign of things to come. After making music together for almost ten years without ever releasing anything, the duo finally found time in Lisbon to craft their first collaborative release, ‘Stand,’ which drops on VOLTA on 16th February. Hey Victor, welcome and thanks for joining us. Where are you talking to us from, and what have you been up to over the last few weeks? Thanks for having me. I’m home in Lisbon at the moment, where I’ve spent most of January. I took a little break from touring this month, so lots of time in the studio working on some new projects and also spending time with my partner and close friends. Good times! :) Tell us about VOLTA, the influence and vision behind it. VOLTA is a platform to bring people together. I always had a bit of difficulty placing my music, and I know many new artists go through the same, so I thought there was an opportunity to create something special out of it. We have three main pillars: music, community and charity. Music is the main one, of course. I really take my time curating and choosing the songs that I sign. I even help - when necessary - the artists with some direction if they’re open for the best final result. With this interaction comes the community. VOLTA is a place where artists connect and exchange ideas and music and help each other grow. Many artists have collaborations between themselves already. It’s very organic and beautiful. The last part is maybe the most important: charity. We donate 10% of profits to organisations or causes that the artists choose. This part is quite special because it makes artists reflect and choose what kind of causes connect with them, and we get to spread joy and help all over. What artists have released music on VOLTA, and what artists would you like to sign music from in future? Besides myself we have Alex Stein, Wehbba, Christian Smith, Balthazar & Jackrock, Thomas Schumacher, Drunken Kong, Tao Andra, Tomas Otero, Lisa May, Ignacio Arfeli, HNGT, ANDATA, Nico Cabeza, Bruce Zalcer, Lutgens, Martin Kinrus. Maceo Plex would be amazing, but I just LOVE the vibes of Maetrik. What do you look for when curating releases for VOLTA? Authenticity, quality and being out of the box. The rest doesn’t really matter. What release on VOLTA has had the most significant impact and why? There were a few ones. ANDATA - Play Hard was our first top 1 on Beatport. Tao Andra - Gracias a la Vida had a MASSIVE repercussion in Argentina, and my track “Touch the Darkness” went really high on the charts and is still there. Many sweet moments and great rewards because, in the end, I’m releasing music I love and believe. What other labels are you currently enjoying and why? Ninja Tunes has to be the one. I just love the musical direction and depth of what they release. Also really admire No Art for their events and artistic environment. What is your favourite track ever released on VOLTA, and why? I love them all; I don’t have a favourite. I must say I’m very proud of the whole catalogue of songs we have on VOLTA. Take a look. :) What characteristics make a good label boss? Not being a boss but a friend, a motivator to give and to listen. I’m not doing this to be a “boss”; I just want to help other artists showcase their amazing music and give them a place in this scene. It’s all about generating opportunities for others and being grateful while having a clear direction and a vision. What advice do you have for other potential label bosses and aspiring artists? Know what you want and never compromise on the music because of stupid reasons. I created VOLTA because I was mistreated by many labels, and there were too many “games” that we had to play in order to be able to have a release. Remember: we’re doing this for the music, and this should be the only criterion. Lastly, what can we expect from your label in the coming months? Andy Largo has been active in the electronic music scene for over 25 years. Known for his genre-diverse approach, showcasing his love for Deep, tech house and melodic techno, Andy uses his sets to tell captivating stories and take fans on a musical journey. My love (musically) for Maya Jane Coles started with this track. Great producer and always with a special “darkness” in her music. Alexander Matchak - Machete Another driving deep house track, just love it at the peak time. The poly rhythm part is great for energy. I also often use it. Joren Edwards - Searching For You I´m also a big Minimal Deep Tech lover, especially with these glitchy chords, dark pads and special grooves inspire me always. Evolving over a month-long trans-Atlantic collaborative process, “Deep In The Glowing Heart (Night Version)”, feels like an explosive release of energy, inspired by Hopkins’ return to regular DJing this year. With early versions of this track being premiered to huge crowds by both artists at their DJ sets across the world - including ANNA at Coachella, and Hopkins at Fabric - the Night Version is now available to hear widely for the first time. The original version of “Deep In The Glowing Heart” is found on Jon Hopkins’ latest studio album Music For Psychedelic Therapy, released in November last year. Talking about the song, Hopkins said there is a feeling that “music can cleanse you, music can guide you through”. The Night Version takes you on a very different journey. Hopkins says of the collaboration: “I first came across ANNA’s music through her track Hidden Beauties, which I found myself playing in DJ sets all the time and always goes down so well. I then asked her to remix Singularity and the results were so amazing I was super keen to work with her again but in a more collaborative way, rather than just handing over stems. We went back and forth a lot and it flowed really well. I love how this one turned out, it’s such a meeting of our two styles.” ANNA adds: “It is a big honor to be able to create music together with Jon. His music is part of my daily life, part of my meditations, my long walks and contemplative moments. My remix for his track ‘Singularity’ had a huge impact on my career and getting to know Jon better since then, and collaborate on this version of DITGH, it feels like our relationship has come full circle!” Music For Psychedelic Therapy was Hopkins’ first full-length since sister albums, the GRAMMY-nominated Singularity (2018) and Immunity (2013), it was a departure in sound from these records; “an album with no beats, not one drum sound, something that is closer to a classical symphony than a dance / electronica record.” Alongside festival appearances this summer, Jon Hopkins is pleased to present several special playback events where there will be an immersive playback of Music For Psychedelic Therapy in full. Having run several of these gatherings previously in London, Austin and Los Angeles, upcoming dates include Wilderness Festival and Ireland’s Body & Soul Festival. Jon Hopkins has recently composed the score in 360 spatial sound for Unboxed Festival’s Dreammachine. Similarly positioned to Hopkins most recent album, Dreammachine is a multi-sensory experience based on Brion Gysin’s original flicker device and aims to unlock the mind through lights and music.
