Ataxia have returned to Planet E Communications with new EP ‘The Whistles’, delivering two tracks that lean fully into the rough-edged club energy and DIY spirit at the centre of the duo's identity. Buy/Stream it here: https://planete.lnk.to/ziCutU.
Out now via Carl Craig's longstanding imprint, the release marks another chapter in Ataxia’s relationship with the label following their ‘Oblivion’ EP in 2020 and subsequent remix work under Craig’s Psyche alias.
Across two tracks, Ted Krisko and Eric Ricker continue to blur the lines between Detroit house, techno and the punk influences that helped shape their earliest years in music.
Opening title track ‘The Whistles’ immediately throws listeners into a hypnotic groove built around restless movement and raw energy. Vocal fragments drift in and out of the arrangement while rolling percussion and shifting textures create a feeling of controlled chaos, carrying the kind of late-night pressure designed for darker club spaces.
On the flip side, ‘Hocus on Pocus’ moves into stranger territory. Elastic basslines twist around analogue effects and warped sonic details, gradually building into a more psychedelic and unpredictable journey while maintaining the same dancefloor focus running throughout the release.
That combination of roughness and functionality has long defined Ataxia's approach. Before emerging within Detroit's electronic scene, both members came through Michigan's punk and hardcore communities before becoming immersed in the city’s wider techno movement and the orbit surrounding figures such as Richie Hawtin.
Rather than leaving those influences behind, Ataxia continue to carry them forward through hardware-led production and music that feels closer to the energy of a live band than conventional club music.
With ‘The Whistles’, the duo reconnect with Planet E at full intensity, delivering two cuts that feel distinctly Detroit in both attitude and execution.
