N/UM break the rules of club music with fully improvised EP ‘Fade The Heart’

Three men stand in an industrial setting. One in a vibrant patterned shirt, another in a neutral top. Expressive and thoughtful expressions.

In a world where most electronic releases are planned, polished, and pre-programmed, New York-based trio N/UM is doing the complete opposite, making it sound bold and alive.

Their new EP ‘Fade The Heart’ features four atmospheric, hypnotic tracks recorded in one take. No pre-written material. No arrangements. No second chances. Just three artists following instinct and emotion, and trusting where the moment leads. Buy/stream it here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/num3/fade-the-heart.

The result is a fluid and raw body of work that feels more like a live dialogue than a studio product.

N/UM is made up of Grammy-winning engineer and producer Jeremy Loucas, guitarist Elias Meister, and Danish multi-instrumentalist Emil Bovbjerg. Together, they create improvised club music using analogue synths, modular setups, guitars, vocals, and drum machines, all performed live with no programming.

On ‘Fade The Heart’, the trio lock into stripped grooves and build each track from the ground up. It shifts through warm minimalism, rich textures, and tension-filled melodic patterns. Each track feels like it could fall apart or evolve into something entirely new at any second.

This is what gives their sound its energy, the feeling that anything could happen.

Their reputation for pushing boundaries has earned them slots at forward-thinking festivals like Mutek Montréal, Fusion Festival, and Movement Detroit. Their live sets feature no laptops, no stems, and no safety nets, relying solely on real-time creation.

With ‘Fade The Heart’, they bring that same energy into the studio and capture something rare: club music that’s not just made to be played, but lived in the moment.

It’s unpredictable. It’s expressive. And it’s exactly what dance music needs.
