Hot Picks: Sorley Shares an Inspired Selection of Culture-defining Cuts

From his debut EP on Riva Starr’s Snatch! Records through to material on Knee Deep In Sound, Saved, Cuttin’ Headz, and many more, UK talent Sorley has been doing the work over recent years. With his diverse take on house music taking influences from lighter disco realms to darker techno-leaning territories, he’s built on early tips from tastemakers such as BBC Radio 1’s Danny Howard as one of his ‘Future Fire’ artists and looks set to elevate things further as he continues to showcase his growing sound. Welcoming another label debut to the mix, he opened September with a big first outing on Revival New York with the release of his new single, ‘We Go Deep’. You can buy/stream it here: https://snd.click/RNY036.

To mark the release of his latest record, we asked Sorley to provide us with his own Hot Picks selection, to which he delivered an assortment of culture-defining cuts:

“For my hot picks, I’ve chosen a few tracks that have influenced me heavily and held deep memories at certain times in my life; there’s also few secret set weapons.” - Sorley.

Marcos Cabral - Loose Lips

I love the sounds in this track, and it’s definitely what is influencing me at the minute. The gritty analogue synths, winding up and down, have got such a raw, jacking feel to them, and it has been a big hit in my sets recently. It just hooks you on the dance floor.

Michael Bibi - Shaolin Dreams

Get well, Bibi! Michael has been a big inspiration in what he has built, not only with Solid Grooves but as an artist. This track is a personal favourite with the Wu-Tang’esque style, which was all I would listen to growing up. I’m looking forward to seeing you back doing your thing soon.

deadmau5 - Sometimes things, whatever

Without knowing at the time, I think this was my first real taste of the music that I love today. I’d have deadmau5 playing as an early teen, and I’d always keep coming back to this one. The groove and the percussion just fully lock you in. It still works so well now.

Christian Smith - Get It Done

This one is a secret set weapon. It always goes off. Big warehouses, small intimate venues... it works so well in both. The interplay with the snares and rims and the rolling baseline, I don’t think this one will ever leave the record bags.

Maya Jane Coles - Nowhere

The vocals and percussion in this one really do it for me. I think the vocals speak to many of us and why we love music so much. We may feel a bit disjointed with things in life, and we find our tribe through music.

Soul Capsule - Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)

Whenever I’m travelling in the car for a gig, we will always play this one. It just reminds me of going on a proper journey, which is what this life is all about. A really beautiful record.

Green Velvet - Genedefekt (Cajmere’s Instrumental Mix)

I first heard this tune in DC 10 when the Martinez Brothers dropped it, and I think if you want to get the true taste of a track, this is the best place to hear it first. The synths in this are just everything, and with the driving bass, I think it epitomises the terrace for me.

Tiga - Pleasure from the Bass (Subb-an Remix)

Crosstown Rebels is responsible for a lot of my early inspirations, and this is one of them. Subb-an created a special remix with this one. Shout out to Tiga, too, for the legendary vocals.

Lorenzo - Get Deep

This is the perfect warm-up groover for me; it’s timeless. It’s also a lovely record to drive to; it’s hypnotic, and the vocals are so fitting. I once heard Shonky play this in a peak set, and it fully went off, something I love about the best DJs.

Azari & III - Hungry For The Power (Jamie Jones Ridge Street Remix)

This is THE track for me. This is when I first fully fell in love with house music and started chasing my dream of becoming an artist and DJ. When I was working in my full-time job before deciding to quit and go for music, I would have this blasting on the way there and on the way home. It just kept me going, believing one day I would make it, and we got there. I’m looking forward to the day I create a track that resonates like this, and I hope it just has the effect on one person to chase their dreams the way this one did to me.
