OPOLOPO and Dimitri From Paris help launch the Spring Revisited project, which invites highly respected house music producers to remix and re-edit classic tracks from New York's Spring Records.
Spring Records operated through the 1970's, releasing many seminal soul, funk and disco tracks that have left their mark on today's music scene.
This release sees OPOLOPO and Dimitri From Paris individually rework Millie Jackson's classic disco track, "We Got to Hit It Off." The original is famed for its soulful vocal performance and captivating lyrics about female empowerment. Its sweeping strings and funky bassline also add to its upbeat vibe and feel-good energy.
Both of the remix artists are legends within the global house scene, and combined, they have been releasing music for nearly four decades.
Dimitri From Paris is a French artist who started his career as a radio DJ, before moving into the world of music production where he has remixed music by artists ranging from Björk to New Order. He has also soundtracked fashion shows for the likes of Chanel, Gaultier, and Lagerfeld. Dimitri From Paris also has close ties to the Defected record label and their Glitterbox events. He has played headline DJ shows at iconic venues and festivals across the globe.
OPOLOPO is a Swedish disco maestro and house music aficionado, he is a highly skilled producer who has the Midas touch when it comes to remixing music. He has done official remixes for artists such as Gregory Porter, Lisa Shaw, Barbara Tucker, and many other iconic vocalists. So, he was the perfect choice to remix Millie Jackson's "We Got to Hit It Off," and it's in a similar vein to the original music OPOLOPO has released through record labels such as Z Records, Reel People Music, and Local Talk.
Talking about his contribution to the Sprint Revisited project, OPOLOPO said: "It was an absolute honour and a tremendous treat to remix a legendary R&B icon like Millie Jackson. We Got To Hit It Off is a standout example of her powerful vocals and ability to bring both passion and playfulness to her music. In my main mix, I tried to be respectful of the original, staying with the disco vibes while injecting a bit of funk and boogie. On the deeper mix, I aimed for a later time slot on the dance floor, when things are a bit more stripped down, sweaty and raw."
"We Got to Hit It Off (Dimitri From Paris Liberated Women Mix)" is the leading version, and it's an up-tempo remix that's true to the original, but with some added percussion and modern production to give it a chunky groove. Dimitri From Paris also provides a 'Dub Mix' with less use of the vocal, plus some trumpets, deep pads, and flamboyant drum fills boosting the funk-fuelled groove of the backing track.
OPOLOPO takes a more synthesised approach with his remix, which centres around a new bassline that lays a funky foundation for the original's vocal, strings and guitar licks. It's a sassy rework made with modern dance floors in mind, and he has also done a 'Deeper Remix' with lush pads and beefed-up percussion.
This release breathes new life into a timeless classic, while staying true to the mood and message of the original.
