Chilsta Channels His South African Roots On New Single ‘Back’

South African-born producer Chilsta has released ‘Back’, a new single that places rhythm at the centre of his increasingly wide-ranging electronic sound.

Drawing on the musical culture of his upbringing alongside influences spanning Hip Hop, RnB, Pop, Techno and Tech House, Chilsta has been developing an approach that resists settling neatly into one genre. Afro House remains an important reference point, particularly in the percussion and groove that underpin his productions.

‘Back’ brings those rhythmic instincts firmly into focus. A deep, steady beat establishes the track before percussion, understated pads and short synth hits begin filling the space around it.

Stuttering vocal chops become one of its defining elements, locking into the groove alongside repeating synth motifs and atmospheric layers. Rather than maintaining the same intensity throughout, Chilsta breaks the momentum with softer arpeggiated passages before gradually bringing the track back towards its original pulse.

The second half introduces shuffling synth leads and further chopped vocals, adding movement without disrupting the hypnotic character established earlier in the arrangement.

It is an approach that reflects Chilsta’s broader development as both a producer and DJ. His varied musical influences remain present, but increasingly serve as ingredients rather than strict stylistic boundaries, allowing him to pull ideas from different corners of his listening history while working towards a more identifiable sound of his own.

That connection between his South African roots and a broader interest in contemporary electronic music is becoming an important part of his output. With ‘Back’, the emphasis falls less on fitting into a particular genre and more on using groove, repetition and gradual movement to shape the listening experience.
