Cevin Fisher on collaboration, connection, and keeping the soul in house with ‘Sunshine’

Cevin Fisher has spent decades shaping the sound of house music. From early New Jersey clubs to global festival stages, his influence runs deep. Now, with his latest collaboration ‘Sunshine’ alongside David Morales and Romina Johnson, he is tapping back into the spirit that first drew him to the scene. Out now on Morales’ DIRIDIM Records, the track brings together three artists with shared roots in house and soul. Buy/stream it here: https://djdavidmorales.lnk.to/SUNSHINE.

“David and I go way back,” says Fisher. “The first project we did together was a song I wrote and produced for Suzanne Palmer called ‘Luv 2 Luv’. David loved it and did a remix that became a proper club anthem. We’ve worked on so many things over the years, so it’s cool that we’re still keeping it going. ‘Sunshine’ just came naturally. I played him a rough demo, and he had great ideas to take it to the next level.”

Romina Johnson’s powerful vocal cuts through the production, adding warmth and depth. Best known for her voice on Artful Dodger’s ‘Movin’ Too Fast’, she brings emotional weight to the collaboration. “Romina had been working with David on other songs, so he asked her to come in for this one,” Fisher recalls. “The timing was perfect because I was already in London doing some work over at Defected HQ. David booked Dean Street Studios to record her vocals and the backgrounds. It was truly magical.”

Built around an expressive bassline, rolling percussion and Johnson’s soulful delivery, ‘Sunshine’ lands somewhere between the old and the new. “We just tried to capture the energy of traditional house,” says Fisher. “The music was inspired by the early Salsoul Records vibe, but we beefed up the beats and tempo to make it fit today’s sound.”

For Fisher, collaboration is key. Having been part of the original New York and New Jersey movement, he knows what makes music connect. “These days a lot of productions are made by one person in one studio,” he says. “That’s not a bad thing, but I think real magic happens when more than one creative mind is involved. Technology makes it easier to create, but collaboration gives the music its soul.”

Even after a lifetime in the game, Fisher remains as active as ever, releasing through labels like Defected, Nervous, King Street, and Armada, while also running his own imprint importTracks. “I’ve always believed in finding balance,” he says. “Work with strong labels that have reach, but also keep your independence. That’s how you stay fresh.”

His recent projects have shown his willingness to evolve, from the experimental ‘Innergalactic’ EP to his ‘Everytime I Try’ remix with DJ Chus. “There’s no set formula,” he says. “I just stay open. Inspiration comes naturally. With Chus, it was pure energy. He added his Iberican sound, and DJs like Louie Vega and Jamie Jones really supported it. That was special.”

For Fisher, the drive is the same as it has always been. “My love for music keeps me evolving. I don’t stick to one sound, and I never have. I’m just a music lover with a wide palette,” he says. “That’s what keeps me inspired and why collaborations like ‘Sunshine’ still feel so exciting.”
