Adam Alydrus catches our attention with an impressive debut album of downtempo organic house/electronica titled, The Bridge.
He is an Indonesian multi-instrumentalist who creates his own instruments, and the 9-track release comes via Sabo’s record label Sol Selectas.
Those familiar with Sol Selectas know what to expect from the label, and this album is definitely on the deeper/more atmospheric side of their sound.
Sabo saw Adam Alydrus performing live at the Bali Spirit Festival, and approached him for music after being spellbound by his unique sound.
Part of what makes Adam Alydrus’ sound so individual, is his use of an instrument called the “Indulung,” which he made himself.
The Indulung is played on many of the album’s tracks, and it’s got a unique, but familiar sound, combining tones and twangs that are reminiscent of other instruments such as the Moroccan gembri, tar, saz, harp, melodica, and sape.
There is a storytelling vibe to the release, as it opens with the soothing mood of “Hulu,” then it slows down for the next couple of tracks, and focuses on changing percussive flows. It then picks up again with a bigger focus on synthesised pads and other electronic sounds. The tempo drops again at “Beirut,” then the final two tracks are more traditional organic house.
The tracks also have other organic instruments such as European overtone flutes, and live percussion played by Adam Alydrus.
There are definitely some DJ friendly tracks on the release, and on a whole, it’s a great package showcasing Adam Alydrus’ exceptional musical talent.
