This one sits in an interesting space.
‘The Pocket’ from A2K doesn’t fully commit to one lane, and that’s exactly why it works. On paper, it’s a tech house track. In practice, it stretches further.
The groove is still grounded. You’ve got that familiar low-end push and steady rhythm that keeps things club-ready. But layered on top, there’s a different energy building. Arpeggiated synths run through the track, adding movement that feels closer to melodic techno or even trance at points.
It creates a contrast that keeps things unpredictable. The vocal adds another layer to that. It’s not dominant, more atmospheric than direct, drifting through the mix and reinforcing that wider, almost spacey feel. There’s a definite sense of scale to the track, something that feels bigger than a standard tech house tool.
At the same time, it keeps a rough edge. The groove isn’t polished to the point of losing character. It still feels raw enough to work in a darker club setting, where texture matters as much as melody.
We’ve found this one works in transition moments. It’s not a straight peak-time weapon, but it bridges sounds in a way that helps shift a set from one direction to another without feeling forced.
Released via Obscura Recordings as part of the label’s first VA, ‘The Pocket’ stands out by not following a single formula.
It leans into the grey area between genres, and that’s where it sticks.
