UrMUMSBSMT Turns Up the Pressure on Kabo Cana’s ‘I DON’T UNDERSTAND’

Kabo Cana’s debut on QRUK lands like a punch to the gut. The original version of ‘I DON’T UNDERSTAND’ is messy in the best way. Chaotic, unfiltered, jagged at the edges. All swung percussion, warbling bass and a strange sense of unease that never quite resolves. It’s the sort of track that wouldn’t sit still if you asked it to. You can hear the energy of his DJ sets bleeding through. Sweaty dancefloors at XLR, SOUP and the Deaf Institute. That late-night, loose-limbed feeling is baked into every layer.
But it’s the remix from Burnley’s UrMUMSBSMT that really catches your attention.
Known for his work on ec2a, Profound Sound and BlueDollarBillz, he’s carved a lane for himself with a no-frills approach to UKG. Here, he strips ‘I DON’T UNDERSTAND’ down to its bare bones and rebuilds it as a shadowy 90s-style roller. The clutter’s gone, replaced with deep subs and just enough groove to keep you locked in.
There’s a haunted quality to it. The vocal stabs echo like memories of a rave you’re not sure you actually went to. The swing is still there, but it’s more considered. Less frantic, more hypnotic. And that low end is pressure in the chest, not the ears. Built for heads-down moments, red-lit basements and sound systems that rattle the walls.
What makes this remix hit is how confident it feels. UrMUMSBSMT isn’t trying to do too much. He just lets the vibe simmer. He knows when to pull back, when to twist the filter, when to drop a cheeky fill, and when to do absolutely nothing. It’s subtle but heavy. And that’s a hard thing to pull off.
QRUK are clearly dialled into what’s moving right now. This pairing makes total sense. One to sit with. One to rinse.
