The latest guest in the Undrtone X Jake Tomas and Paul HG and Friends mix series is an artist whose relationship with house music runs deep.

For Piem, this sound was never a trend or a phase. It was an environment he grew up in.

Growing up in Spain during the late nineties, dance music was everywhere. Compilation CDs filled homes, cars and bedrooms, forming a shared cultural backdrop rather than something underground or exclusive. But one moment shifted everything from casual listening to commitment.

“Everything changed in 1998 when I discovered the Pacha Ibiza ’97 and ’98 CDs mixed by DJ Pippi,” he says. “Tracks like ‘Sueño Latino’, ‘Horny’ by Mousse T and ‘House Music’ by Eddie Amador made me realise this was more than just music I liked.”

By 2000, Piem was buying records and learning the craft properly. “The first three records I ever bought were ‘Paradise’ by Bob Sinclar, ‘Outro Lugar’ by Salomé de Bahia and ‘Don’t Stop’ by Soul Vision. I still remember that moment clearly.”

Barcelona became both his base and his proving ground. Over the years, he has seen the city evolve alongside him. “It used to have many clubs with strong identities and early sessions I really loved,” he explains. “Now the scene feels more diverse and unpredictable, shaped by festivals, local labels and international influence, with Ibiza always close by.”

While much has changed, his connection to the city remains strong. “I miss when record shops were real social hubs, but the creative spirit is still alive. Right now, I feel like I am in one of my strongest and happiest moments, especially through my work at W Barcelona and my residency at Jackies.”

That long-running role at W Barcelona goes far beyond DJing. “It is about understanding the space and the audience while keeping things fresh,” he says. “I focus on consistency and discovery. Bringing back artists who feel at home, while also introducing emerging talent and respected names who rarely play in the city.”

Trust is central to that process. “We have built a loyal crowd that trusts the experience itself. That comes from years of work and a strong team delivering quality every week.”

As a DJ who has played Sonar, Space Miami and Pacha Ibiza, reading a room quickly is essential. “I always arrive early, listen to the DJ before me and understand the context,” he explains. “I adapt rather than playing pre-planned sets. Preparation is a framework, not a script.”

Jackies holds a special place in that journey. “I truly feel at home there,” he says. “The musical philosophy is clear, the team is fully committed, and Guillem’s passion for party culture sets the tone. The creative freedom and knowledgeable crowd make it incredibly rewarding.”

In the studio, his process is intuitive and dancefloor-focused. “I work fluidly, often across multiple projects. I take inspiration from old sample packs, second-hand vinyl and classic records. I always make music I can play myself, which keeps the connection between studio and club very real.”

Radio support from names like Pete Tong and Danny Howard still carries weight, but Piem remains grounded. “It is always meaningful on a personal level,” he says. “But today, radio alone does not guarantee impact. Momentum now comes from many places, and the work continues in a different way.”

Twenty years in, his sound still fits naturally in clubs because of what he has chosen to stop doing. “I stopped drinking excessively and prioritised my wellbeing,” he reflects. “I also stopped making music just to fit a label or get booked. Focusing on what I genuinely connect with has made my sound more honest.”

Away from music, balance keeps him grounded. “Spending time with my family and my girlfriend matters. Sports and travelling help me disconnect so I can come back refreshed.”

As the latest guest in the Undrtone X Jake Tomas and Paul HG and Friends mix series, Piem brings not just experience, but perspective.
