Neon Diffraction steps into new territory with ‘Iron River’, a release that brings together the momentum of drum and bass with the emotional weight and storytelling of American blues.

The project marks a new direction for UK producer Ru Goddard, known previously for his house-focused work as Neon Transmission. While earlier releases sat firmly within house and electronic spaces, ‘Iron River’ pushes towards something more exploratory.

The contrast becomes immediately noticeable. Built around a smoky blues-inspired vocal, the track pairs weathered emotion with rolling drum and bass breaks, creating a sound that feels both familiar and unexpected. The vocal carries a rawness and warmth that sits naturally against the more modern rhythmic framework underneath.

That tension defines the release. The production balances grit and smoothness throughout, allowing traditional blues influence to exist comfortably alongside liquid-inspired drum programming and atmospheric electronic textures. Rather than forcing two styles together, the arrangement lets them evolve around one another organically.

The groove remains central throughout. Rolling percussion and fluid low-end movement keep the track anchored to drum and bass foundations, while melodic layers and vocal moments widen the emotional scope of the record. It feels reflective without losing momentum.

There’s also a wider sense of experimentation behind the release itself. Emerging through conversations and a deeper exploration of artists such as Makoto, the idea behind ‘Iron River’ came from recognising how little overlap exists between blues traditions and contemporary drum and bass production.

That willingness to explore new spaces continues through Neon Diffraction as a project. Released through Goddard’s own Diffraction Records platform, the alias serves as a home for more genre-fluid work that sits outside the boundaries of his established output.

With ‘Iron River’, Neon Diffraction delivers something that feels genuinely distinct, blending the soul of blues with the movement of drum and bass to create a release that looks backwards and forwards at the same time.
