Mostra Barcelona has published its latest sustainability update in partnership with ReRoot, outlining environmental and social initiatives introduced during the 2025 edition and expanded ahead of Mostra Barcelona 2026.
The independent Barcelona festival has positioned sustainability as a central part of its long-term planning through its Sustainability Framework and Roadmap 2024–26. The latest update focuses on practical changes across areas including artist travel, venue infrastructure, food vendors and waste management.
Travel remains the largest contributor to the festival’s carbon footprint. In response, Mostra introduced incentives encouraging artists to travel by high-speed rail rather than air where possible. Artists choosing rail travel were offered an additional night in Barcelona as a gesture of support for lower-carbon touring.
Venue planning also played a role in reducing audience travel impact. New locations selected for the 2025 edition were positioned close to metro stations, allowing visitors to access events easily through public transport.

The festival continued its collaboration with Barcelona social initiatives when sourcing materials for stage and set construction. Shared-use resources were provided by the cooperative Banc de Recursos Mancomunats, while chill-out areas featured upcycled cushions created from repurposed Mostra banners and reclaimed club sofa foam.
Food vendors were also selected with social impact in mind. Several stalls supporting migrant and minority communities were included in the programme, alongside a wide selection of meat-free food options.
To guide future sustainability efforts, Mostra also secured funding for a full carbon footprint assessment in 2025 with external verification from Zero Consulting.
The full sustainability report and carbon assessment are available via the festival website ahead of the next edition in Barcelona.
