Few artists have risen through the progressive ranks as naturally as Lloyd Barwood. The London-based DJ and producer has become one of the most talked-about new names in the scene, earning early support from Sasha, Henry Saiz and Eelke Kleijn. Now, he returns to the spotlight with his new ‘Chain of Thoughts’ EP on Last Night On Earth, alongside a guest mix that captures his deep, melodic world.
“It’s a huge milestone for me,” he says. “Each track came from a different place emotionally, but together they show my range as a producer. I didn’t expect them to end up on the same EP because they’re so different, but I’m glad they did. Each track has its own moment depending on your mood.”
The title track, ‘Chain of Thoughts’, was born out of inspiration from a night watching Sasha play. “I remember being on the dancefloor and hearing those reese basslines and chopped vocals that define his sets,” Lloyd says. “The next day I sat down in my home studio and told myself, I’m going to make a track like that. It came together really quickly. The complexity is in the arrangement and production quality. Less is more.”
The second track, ‘Hey Hey’, fuses tribal percussion and progressive emotion. “From the start, I wanted to recreate that 90s and 00s tribal prog sound, that Lexicon Avenue vibe,” he explains. “The Juno 106 was key for this one. Most of the elements came from it, giving the record that analogue warmth and nostalgic feel.”
Then comes ‘Dance’, a heavy, driving floor-filler built for peak-time moments. “Before anything else, I’m a raver,” Lloyd says. “The dancefloor is everything. I always get a record 90% done, then test it in my sets. If it gets a big enough reaction, I’ll tweak it until it’s perfect. I’m making dance music at the end of the day.”
That same attention to energy runs through his new Undrtone guest mix, which blends new IDs and tracks from artists like Layo & Bushwacka!, Guy Mantzur, and Sasha. “My intention with every mix is to tell a story and take listeners on a journey from start to finish,” he says. “I decide what kind of vibe I want to create, pull together a crate of music that embodies that, and build the energy around it. I’ve included a few IDs too that people will be hearing for the first time.”
Beyond the studio, Lloyd’s year is full of momentum. “First and foremost, I have the Chain of Thoughts EP coming out on 24 October and I’ll be heading to ADE to celebrate,” he says. “Then I’ve got another release on Of Us Records in November that shows a heavier side of my sound, and our fifth Super Progressive day party in Brixton on the 8th. Balance Festival Croatia next summer is another dream moment for me. Playing alongside my heroes will be one for the memory books.”
As for what’s next, Lloyd hints at a big announcement coming in December and more releases already in the pipeline. “I’m constantly creating,” he says. “Every track I make is another step forward. This EP feels like the start of something special.”
