Label Lounge: Interview with CJ Jeff, Frontman of Rhythmetic Records

CJ Jeff

An artist boasting an impressive release archive and globetrotting performance resume, Greek electronic stalwart CJ Jeff finally lands on Solardo’s Sola Records imprint with an electrifying peak-time cut. Combining with fellow countryman and funk-soul-r&b vocalist Georges Perin, “Around” builds around a captivating vocal topline with chugging drum grooves, rippling arps, modulating analogue bass notes and expansive audioscapes. A track with endless depth and width within its production - “Around”, pushes the boundaries of aural experience and was made to be played loud. Download/stream “Around” from 3rd November here: https://bfan.link/around-1.

Greek producer and DJ CJ Jeff has a wealth of experience in the electronic music world, from A&R to event promotion to co-owning clubs and owning a label. Starting as a raver at Cavo Paradiso and Ministry of Sound, CJ Jeff soon learnt he wanted to be on the other side of the booth, playing his music to large crowds.

CJ’s earliest releases have found homes on Souvenir, These Days, Supernova’s Lapsus Music and John Digweed’s influential Bedrock Records. With such a long-standing career, CJ Jeff has seen further success recently, releasing on many labels, including 8Bit, Objektivity and Kling Klong. The last two years saw him secure releases on seminal and respected brands such as Circus Recordings, Saved Record and Stereo Productions - all receiving a multitude of support from artists such as Dennis Ferrer, Oxia, Nic Fanciulli and Rafa Barrios, adding to his impressive history in music production.

Fresh from his latest release, we caught up with CJ Jeff as he joins us for the latest Label Lounge feature:

Thanks for joining us CJ. Where are you talking to us from, and what have you been up to over the last few weeks?

At the moment, I am in Athens, but in previous weeks, I was touring Barcelona, Toronto, Chicago, Miami, São Paulo and Santiago de Chile.

Introduce your record label and tell us about the influence and vision behind it.

My baby is called “Rhythmetic Records”, and what we release is what I love to release - simple as that.

What artists have released on the label, and what artists would you like to sign music from in future?

Artists like Jerome Sydenham, Little Fritter, and Anthony Attalla.

Our first-ever release was vinyl, only a track of mine with Meco Plex under his Maetrik alias remix.

What do you look for when curating releases for your label?

It is like digging in a vinyl store, and finally, you listen to a tune that sounds like nothing else you have listened to before. That’s it!

What release on your label has had the most significant impact and why?

Marianto Simple World, our remix Thodoris Triantafillou and CJ Jeff; it’s still hot with black coffee and guy gerber play that ten years after the release date!! It’s a classic.

What other labels are you currently enjoying and why?

My previous release was at Spinnin Deep, and as I am working with original vocal tracks that can sound a little more “pop”, I believe that is the right label to get this music out. They do great work.

What is your favourite track ever released on the label and why?

That’s a tough question!!

What characteristics make a good label boss?

Be open-minded.

What advice do you have for other potential label bosses and aspiring artists?

Trust the artists more; don’t believe the hype.

Lastly, what can we expect from your label in the coming months?

Some deeeep ones!
