Kyle Watson Turns Procrastination Into A Deadline On ‘Ask Me Tomorrow’
Kyle Watson has released ‘Ask Me Tomorrow’, his first album since 2018 and the culmination of an unusual experiment in making the normally private process of creating an LP public.
Released through his own No Context Records, the 11-track project was written against an 18-week deadline, with Watson documenting its development in real time. Rather than presenting listeners with a finished campaign months after the creative decisions had been made, the South African producer opened up the process as it happened.
That self-imposed pressure also explains the album’s title. ‘Ask Me Tomorrow’ plays directly on procrastination, turning a habit of postponement into an exercise in accountability and forcing Watson to finish a complete body of work within a defined window.
Musically, the result remains rooted in the bass-heavy house sound associated with Watson, moving through rolling low ends, tightly worked percussion and layered synths while finding room for contrasting moods. ‘9AM’ explores the album’s more rhythmically precise side, while ‘Bones’ brings greater warmth to the record.
Collaboration also plays an important role. Walker & Royce join Watson on ‘Losing Focus’, with Will Clarke and UK MC Scrufizzer among the other artists contributing across the LP.
The release follows recent album singles including ‘Keep Control’ and brings Watson’s public creative experiment to its conclusion. More importantly, it puts the focus back on the finished music after months spent showing exactly how difficult getting there can be.
