Interview: Behind the Beats With Italian DJ/Producer Black Fancy

Black Fancy

Based in Parma, DJ/producer Black Fancy has been active in the Italian house scene since his production debut in 2017. However, it’s only in recent years that he really started to pick up serious attention with regular support from Jamie Jones, Marco Carola, and The Martinez Brothers. Named as one of 1001 Tracklist’s ‘Future Of Dance 2022’ artists, coinciding with a big debut outing on Jones’ Hottrax, he continues to keep things moving with a recent first appearance on The Martinez Brothers’ renowned Cuttin’ Headz imprint with his ‘Obrigado’ EP. Hey, Black Fancy, thanks for joining us. Where are you writing to us from, and what have you been up to over the last few weeks?

Thank you for the opportunity. I am writing to you from my home city, Parma, Italy. In the past week, I have been focusing on the last tour de force before the beginning of the new year, with new production and last gigs.

What led you to this point in your musical journey?

My journey into music began practically from birth when my parents influenced me. But the real moment that gave the input was when I saw my life flash before my eyes. Since that day on, amidst the ups and downs, I’ve focused my whole life on music.

Tell us how you promote yourself as an artist.

To promote myself, as well as to distinguish myself on an artistic and musical level, I try to get to people both socially and emotionally. I always try to establish a relationship.

What can you tell us about your ‘Obrigado’ EP on Cuttin’ Headz?

My latest release is part of a goal/dream which I have always pursued. I worked there for years, as the Martinez Brothers have always been my greatest inspiration. Knowing that my work is being released on their label is one of my greatest satisfactions ever.

What has the feedback been like on the release?

The feedback has been very positive; Obrigado has started to receive support since last year up to now. It is a release that includes different sounds and, consequently, can be extended to a wide audience.

What do you do to take care of your mind?

I try to cure and always do the moments where I use my mental energy. The moments where I need to disconnect and the environment that surrounds me are undoubtedly things that help me.

Talk us through how you structure your productions.

My creative process is influenced by everything around me, whether it’s the environment, people, etc. I am an artist who adapts and is influenced by the ideas of others but who always puts their imprint on every idea I find.

Do you have any advice for other artists?

To aspiring artists who want to enter this world, the advice that I always give is to have passion and dedication and not to fall at the first difficulties, as they will only give you the strength to continue.

What was your biggest goal in 2023, and did you achieve it?

I prefer not to spoil it, both for luck and for a question that I prefer to talk and announce only when things are confirmed 100%

Lastly, what can we expect from you in the future?

Expect big news because I think I’m coming into a situation in my career where big changes are coming; stay tuned.
