Günce Aci steps into a tougher lane with ‘The Substance’ EP on Miditrip, delivering three originals that lean into acid, rave pressure and hard house grit without losing the atmosphere that defines her catalogue.

In recent years, the Istanbul-based producer has become a key figure both locally and internationally, with releases on Ombra INTL, Dischi Autunno, Eskimo Recordings, and Darkroom Dubs. That range reflects an artist comfortable moving between spaces, yet ‘The Substance’ feels like a sharpened pivot.

“With the industry's ever-evolving genres, it’s been hard not to be influenced,” she explains. “It first shifted my DJ sets, and eventually shaped my productions as well.”

Her current sound blends her established sense of storytelling with newer influences drawn from music, cinema and the people around her. The result is a record that feels reactive to the present without abandoning identity.

The title track draws directly from the film that shares its name. “I watched the movie The Substance, and it really moved me,” she says. “It captures the harsh reality of how women are treated in the industry, especially the pressure of beauty standards and ageism.”

That emotional charge runs through the acid bass stabs, gritty rave textures, and layered spoken-word fragments. Tension builds steadily, but never at the expense of movement. For Aci, groove and atmosphere are inseparable. “They have to breathe together,” she explains. “The bassline keeps a constant pulse, while the atmosphere does the emotional heavy lifting.”

‘Too Loud To Think’ channels 90s rave aesthetics but avoids imitation. Using her Digitone and Juno VST to layer melodic parts, she balances modern textures against classic basslines and rhythmic frameworks. The aim was not nostalgia, but recontextualisation.

Closing cut ‘Last Dance’ acts as a narrative finale. “I wanted it to feel like the final chapter where everything clicks,” she says. Driving yet weighted, it carries a sense of farewell while leaving tension unresolved, suggesting what might follow.

Istanbul continues to shape her sonic language. Influences from post-punk, darkwave, and Anatolian rock surface subtly in her melodic phrasing, adding a character that transcends borders. “People are drawn to something real that tells a different story,” she reflects.

While ‘The Substance’ signals a stronger move toward rawer rave energy, Aci makes it clear she will not be confined. “It’s a strong signal of where I am,” she says, “but I’ll always leave the door open for different experiments.”
