  • Introducing Club Colette: Digbeth's New Underground Destination

From the team behind Mama Roux's—a Digbeth institution known for its wild parties, confetti drops, and seamless mix of live and electronic music—comes something completely different: Club Colette. Nestled just next door on Lower Trinity Street, this new venue promises to strip things back to basics, putting DJs, intimacy, and top-notch sound quality at the heart of its offering. Unlike Mama Roux's larger-than-life approach, Club Colette is all about reconnecting with the roots of club culture. As the founders put it, they aim to restore what Digbeth has been missing in recent years: community, culture, and a laser focus on the music. The venue is split across two rooms, each with its unique vibe. The main room features a tiered design, perfect for elevated dancing and bringing the crowd closer to the DJ booth. Meanwhile, Room 2 takes things down a notch—quite literally—in a cosy, converted fried chicken shop. "It's the smallest room in the city, and we're proud of that," says co-founder Benjy Hill. "The two rooms are linked by a terrace under the Victorian viaducts, where we'll host summer day parties with local and international brands." The focus is on the little details that make for unforgettable nights: intimate spaces, quality sound, and a connection between DJs and the crowd. Club Colette's weekly programming ensures there's a night for every music lover: Fridays showcase emerging talent across genres like hip hop, UK garage, amapiano, and liquid drum and bass, giving up-and-coming artists the spotlight they deserve. Saturdays are reserved for international DJs, bringing underground house and techno stars into the club's intimate, high-energy setting. "While there's a place for the bigger venues, we're about going the other way," explains Hill. "We want to bring world-class artists back in front of the kinds of crowds that first shaped them. And we're shining a light on our residents, who have too often been overlooked in today's rave culture." Club Colette isn't just a club; it's part of a larger vision to transform Lower Trinity Street into a true cultural destination. With plans to incorporate food in 2025 and use all five arches for events, the venue creates a space where everyone can find their groove. "There really is something for everyone now," says Hill, highlighting the ambition behind the project. Before the official launch next year, Club Colette is offering a taste of what's to come with a special daytime party on 14th December. Teaming up with the Italian collective After Caposile and Birmingham's own CNTRL, the event will feature headliners Kepler and Francesco Maddalena, as well as residents Lopaski, Mizo, Mark Birch, and more. Expect a proper underground vibe across both rooms. Instagram: @club.colette Tickets for the Opening Party: Available here Club Colette is all set to shake up Digbeth's nightlife with a back-to-basics ethos and a fresh perspective. This is one opening you won't want to miss.

  • Music Industry Workers Could Lose a Quarter of Their Income to AI by 2028

According to the first global study into AI's impact on the creative sectors, music industry workers are at risk of losing nearly a quarter of their income to artificial intelligence (AI) within the next four years. The research, led by the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), predicts a 24% drop in income for music creators by 2028, while those in the audiovisual industry could face a 21% decline. In contrast, revenues from generative AI services are set to explode, growing from £3 billion today to an eye-watering £64 billion in just four years. Altogether, this represents an estimated €22 billion loss for creators—€10 billion in music and €12 billion in audiovisual production—against the backdrop of a booming generative AI market. "For creators of all kinds, from songwriters to film directors, AI has the potential to open up exciting new opportunities," said CISAC President Björn Ulvaeus. "But we must acknowledge that, if left unchecked, generative AI could cause significant harm to human creators, their careers, and their livelihoods." The study, which represents over five million creators globally, combines qualitative and quantitative research to assess AI's growing influence on music and audiovisual production. It serves as a stark warning about the need for clear regulation to ensure that innovation doesn't come at the expense of creativity. Read the complete study here.

  • Reviewed: Novation Launchkey 37 MK4

The Novation Launchkey 37 MK4 MIDI keyboard brings a fresh wave of creativity and versatility to the music-making process. Compared to the Launchkey 49 MK3 that has been sitting in our studio for a while, we immediately noticed that this MK4 model feels vastly more intuitive and user-friendly. It’s clear that Novation has enhanced the Launchkey to become a powerhouse tool for artists and producers of all levels looking to push their musical boundaries and creative workflow. Look and Feel The Launchkey 37 MK4, part of Novation’s fourth-generation lineup, is rightly described as “The Creative Controller.” From the start, we were struck by its upgraded hardware and refreshed, minimalist design that truly elevates the experience. The build quality feels premium, and the controller integrates seamlessly with all major DAWs, making it easy for you to move between various software setups without missing a beat. The continuous encoders are also a highlight, enabling you to fine-tune mixer levels, virtual instruments, and effects quickly, and even create custom user mappings, tailoring the controls precisely to your specific setup. It’s something that we didn’t realise we disliked about the MK3 model until we got it in the newer version. Sometimes, the finer details make a product way more enjoyable, so that alone is a big pat on the back for Novation! We also appreciated the compact, modern industrial redesign. Despite its tiny footprint, the MK4 packs a complete feature set, making it ideal for studio and live setups. The high-contrast OLED display provides clear and comprehensive feedback, reducing any guesswork around chord types, scales, or parameters. The screen even reduces abbreviations, letting you focus on the music rather than deciphering symbols. In all honesty, it’s another one of those things that made us realise how much we preferred it to the MK3 version again afterwards. There’s just something about a simple black-and-white screen that is easy on the eyes and makes things much more fluid; the previous blue-on-white is almost overwhelming by comparison now when you go back to it. It sounds silly, but it’s such a game-changing and simple tweak that greatly enhanced our user experience. Standout Features The continuation of its 16 velocity-sensitive pads with polyphonic aftertouch keeps the possibilities and control when writing, recording and arranging music pretty limitless, providing expressive interaction for launching clips, playing chords, or finger drumming. These pads are sensitive enough to handle delicate dynamics yet robust enough for intense rhythmic work. Additionally, we found the Chord Modes to be fantastic for exploring chord progressions without requiring in-depth music theory knowledge, again proving its focus on accessibility. The Chord Detector feature, which displays the played chord on the OLED screen, has proven invaluable, especially for learning and composing. One of the most impressive updates is the Generative Arpeggiator, which lets you create patterns with an 8-step editor for unique rhythmic exploration. Combined with Scale Mode, which locks you into one of 30 scales, we found ourselves experimenting with musical ideas that otherwise would not have come to mind. Scale Mode’s various options simplify staying in key and creating a unique, creativity-boosting environment. What comes with it? The included software bundle rounds out the package. With Ableton Live 12 Lite, synths, orchestral samples, and effects processors, it comes ready to go with everything you need to start creating music immediately. The Launchkey MK4’s DAW integration is also more profound than ever, with enhanced “DAW Transport Mode” that allows for smooth control over arrangement views, scrub functions, and more. The sequencer for Ableton Live, which lets you input notes directly into MIDI clips using the pads, is another particularly standout feature. Should you get a Novation Launchkey 37 MK4? Overall, the Novation Launchkey 37 MK4 is a massive step forward. From its generative tools to its sleek design and seamless DAW integration, it’s the ideal MIDI controller for those seeking to maximise creativity without compromising user experience. Whether using it for intricate production or live performances, the Launchkey 37 MK4 has proven to be an outstanding addition to any setup. Some of the simplest things that have changed from previous versions have made this new generation of Launchkey products that much more appealing. We think we speak for many producers when we say that sometimes you want elementary but unendingly reliable features in the hardware you will use heavily. It’s so easy to fall in love with a piece of kit when it makes it simple to connect with it and get to work without limitations and free reign. The more we sit and think about it, the harder it gets to find anything we would change about the Novation Launchkey 37 MK4. What you get crammed into a compact unit is pretty crazy, to be honest. It lets you keep things as simple or expansive as you want with your use of it, and it almost refuses to let you fall foul of dreaded writer’s block. As for a product suitable for everyone from entry-level to seasoned pro, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better all-around unit, especially under £200. We’ve got a feeling Santa will be sick of the sight of these come December 25th, and with good reason: they’re bloody brilliant! Head to Novation's website to buy directly or find a stockist near you today!

  • Inside the Mind of Minimal Maestro KICA – A 2 AM Story

In a sea of emerging talent, Vladan Krstic, better known by his stage name, KICA, has carved out his unique place in the electronic music landscape. After captivating audiences this summer with hits like Cuckoo featuring Yohnani and Clockwork, KICA has returned with his latest track, 2 AM, a minimal tech masterpiece already generating buzz. Released on August 16th via his own KICA Records, the track draws from his deep well of late-night creativity and showcases his signature style of introspective yet driving beats. Download/stream it here: https://hypeddit.com/kica003. KICA’s journey to becoming a prominent figure in the UAE’s dance scene is anything but ordinary. Once a professional athlete and curator of extreme sports events, where he worked with top DJs like Ricardo Villalobos and The Martinez Brothers, KICA was eventually inspired to spin beats himself. By 2020, he was one of the most in-demand DJs in the UAE, and his debut single, Mini, climbed to 4th place on Beatport, followed by a slew of hits such as Street Dance, Dor E Dor, and Caje Caje. In a recent interview, KICA shared the creative process behind 2 AM, a track born out of a late-night studio session that perfectly captures the mysterious energy of working in the early hours. He explained, “2 AM is more than just a track; it’s a moment captured in time. Whilst playing ‘Better Life’, I felt a sudden surge of creativity. As I played the bassline, the first four notes unveiled a completely new song. Before I knew it, I was immersed in creating this track. It all came together at 2 AM.” The track is a hypnotic blend of primal beats, a driving bassline, and glitch synths. It’s the kind of music that invites listeners to dive deeper with every play. “‘2 AM’ isn’t about repetition but about keeping listeners hooked with subtle details,” KICA explained. “The track features unique sounds and shifting elements that keep your ears engaged. The key is to create a sense of mystery and curiosity, so listeners want to hear it again and again to catch every little detail.” Having drawn inspiration from legends like Ricardo Villalobos, Carl Cox, and The Martinez Brothers, KICA has mastered balancing intricate sound design with crowd-moving beats. “Villalobos taught me the importance of detail, patience, and building a journey within a track, while Carl Cox’s sets are an exercise in energy management, knowing when to ramp things up and when to bring it back,” he shared. KICA’s sound reflects this balance—delivering technically masterful productions and creating an experience on the dancefloor. Since launching KICA Records, his ambition has only grown. The support from industry heavyweights like Roger Sanchez, Sam Divine, and Paco Osuna gave him the confidence to push forward with the label. “Their influence and guidance have given me the confidence to create a platform that not only showcases my music but also helps other emerging artists break through,” KICA explained. With 2 AM marking the completion of his recent trilogy of bangers, KICA has plans to keep going. Fans can expect more releases, including his upcoming track Levanta featuring Brazilian vocals, slated for an October release on Hot Fuss. However, his focus remains on growing KICA Records, refining its sound, and solidifying its identity in the electronic music world. “My primary goal is to create a space where I can fully explore and express my sound without limitations,” he said. Beyond the music, KICA’s entrepreneurial spirit is thriving in the UAE. He’s running two companies—Planet Sound, which handles sound systems, lighting, and DJ equipment, and another focused on scenography production under the KICA Group. His work spans everything from movie collaborations with Sony Entertainment to festivals like Dubai’s Lost Nomad. And let’s not forget his personal project, Exotika, where he’s blending house music with a unique decoration style to create lasting, immersive experiences. Looking back on his journey, KICA is proud of the risks he’s taken in championing a niche genre like Minimal Deep Tech. “The challenge was making this less familiar genre stand out,” he shared. “I overcame this by creating exceptional music and showcasing the unique aspects of the genre.” His dedication to the craft has undoubtedly paid off, solidifying his place as a standout talent in the electronic music scene. As KICA continues to evolve and innovate, fans of Minimal Tech and electronic music, in general, should keep their eyes and ears on what this Dubai-based maestro does next. With 2 AM offering just a glimpse of his boundless creativity, the future looks exciting for both KICA and his label.
