Interview: Insights From UK Talent Goosey Folowing His Hottrax Debut

Goosey draws heavily from the Ibiza institution that is DC10. His unique take on underground house has quickly found favour, with high-profile artists such as Marco Carola, Michael Bibi and Joseph Capriati supporting his work. He is one of the breakout names of 2023, taking his forward-thinking sounds to labels like CUFF and BINARY, with his latest release being another big step in his career. You can listen to his 'Restless' EP on Hottrax here: https://orcd.co/hxt119.

Talking of the writing process on the b-side 'Time', Goosey says: "I heard the vocal and immediately knew there was something special about it," adding it is a tune very much made with Jones's Paradise parties in mind. "He often plays some quite deep stuff towards the end of the night, and for me personally, it's always those tracks that I really come away remembering."

Fresh from his latest EP, we were delighted to catch up with Goosey for a deep dive into one of the UK's newest emerging names:

Thanks for joining us Goosey, where are you at the minute and what's been going on recently?

I’m writing to you from Barcelona as this is where I’m living at the moment. I moved here in February and I absolutely love it! The last few weeks have mostly just been spent in the studio. I’m head down in winter mode focussing on creating new music ready for next year. That’s my priority at the moment.

Tell us about your music journey so far.

I’ve always been really interested in electronic music since I was young but there’s definitely a stand out moment where I had the realisation that this is what I wanted to do. Back in 2018 I went to Jamie Jones' party “Paradise” at DC10 Ibiza for the first time and it’s safe to say, that was it. Watching Jamie play into the early hours on the Terrace just completely changed my perspective. I knew from then that this was what I wanted to do.

What tactics do you use to promote yourself and your work?

I don’t know if I’d say I’ve fully figured out “effectively” promoting myself but I’m definitely working on it. I think the more angles you cover from a promotion perspective the better. Instagram can really help if you’re posting regularly on there, especially if your music is being supported by other DJ’s, sharing that sort of content can really help get your name out there quickly. The other thing that I think has helped me a lot has been releasing some free downloads on my Soundcloud profile. I’ve released two free downloads there and both received some really good traction with lots of support from the big names. I’d say those have been the two biggest factors for me personally.

What can you tell us about your Hottrax debut?

My latest release was my Restless EP which just came out on Jamie Jones label Hottrax. The EP contains probably two of my favourite tracks I’ve ever made. One very much made for those peak time club sets. The B Side “Time” shows a deeper side to my music and was built for those early mornings at Paradise.

What has the feedback been like?

It’s been amazing. I’ve received so much incredible feedback from so many different artists and I’m honestly overwhelmed by it all. Seeing so many of the names that I look up to sharing kind words about your music has to be one of the best feelings ever.

How do you keep your mind in check?

I love going to the gym every day, eating clean and generally just feeling healthy physically. For me I think that’s one of the biggest contributing factors to feeling healthy mentally.

Do you have a regimented creative flow?

I don’t have a specific creative process that I always tend to follow. I think it varies day by day and week by week. Sometimes I like finding a vocal or a sample and then building a whole track around that. Other times I’ll just start with a kick drum and a bassline and just build around that. The main thing for me is just finding something I really feel!

What advice do you have for other artists?

My advice for other artists would be to try not to worry too much about what everyone else around you is doing. Be you, make music that you feel and that resonates with you. I think everything else will naturally fall into place as you focus on that.

What is your biggest goal this year, and how close are you to achieving it?

My biggest goal over the next year is to release on Hot Creations. It’s extremely difficult to say how close I am to achieving it but it’s very much front of mind and something I’m working towards.

Anything coming up that you'd like to share?

I have a few releases lined up that I’m really excited about. I can’t say too much right now but all I’ll say is 2024 is going to be a big year!
